Balance brains and brawn in brand new story-driven action RPG Batora: Lost Haven

Stormind Games, developer of the critically acclaimed Remothered franchise and which recently announced its collaboration with award winning writer Anne Toole, Ron Fish – renowned composer of the Arkham Series & former Assassin’s Creed Concept Artist Borislav Mitkov is delighted to reveal the first details and trailer for their brand new IP, Batora: Lost Haven, coming to PC, Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and X and Nintendo Switch.

Built on a rich Action RPG foundation, Batora follows Avril –  a regular 16-year old girl, not a natural born hero – as she realises, after losing everything she cares for, that she is the  only one who can save a dying planet Earth from oblivion. This is how her interplanetary adventure starts: along this journey she will visit colorful and mysterious planets and meet intriguing characters – and she will learn that every choice has a consequence.

Far from a standard aRPG game, Batora is based on the duality between mind and body, introducing a new game mechanic that challenges players to find the perfect balance between the two – losing sight of one could mean that their journey is over. Batora doesn’t present the hero’s journey in black or white, good or evil: there are decisions and there are their consequences. Every single decision Avril makes will turn out to be important, often even life-changing, for the characters she meets or the places she visits.

“We live our lives in a constant state of flux between our physical and mental well being, often with little thought for how they affect each other.” commented Giacomo Masi, Narrative Designer on Batora: Lost Haven. “The journey which Avril takes in Batora really focuses on the need for a strategic dualism – mastering the balance between the physical and the mental –  whilst presenting a multi-branching, narrative full of consequences, rich in plot twists and credible, like-able characters.”

The duality of the lead character is also one of Batora’s most unique features with players required to use the “switch mechanic” to alternate between their physical and mental states. Learning the right time to strike or not be struck and in which state to do so will present a considerable challenge to even the most experienced players.

Whilst taking the studio in a new direction and tackling a new genre, Batora will also stay true to Stormind’s core principles of offering intense, emotional stories in tandem with unique and distinctive art styles.

Gaetano Caltabiano, Art Director on the project, added “Bridging the gap between the physical and mental calls for a particular visual representation and we’ve really tried to distinguish between the two with a hand-painted approach inspired by Sci-Fi art of the 1950s versus the photo-realistic approach of many of today’s AAA titles. We’ve really drawn a lot of inspiration from the likes of Alphonse Mucha and the intense Sci-fi environments of Paul Lehr”

“We’re all extremely excited to finally be able to announce this new adventure to the world”, stated  Antonio Cannata, CEO and Co-Founder of Stormind Games “This is Stormind Games’ first proprietary IP, and our first next-gen video game – we’re stepping up our game, and both as a man who works in this industry and as a passionate gamer, I can positively state that our team’s professional growth, together with the contribution of stars such as Anne Toole, Borislav Mitkov  and Ron Fish, definitely makes Batora: Lost Haven our most ambitious project so far”

Batora: Lost Haven will launch for PC, Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and X and Nintendo Switch.

5 Reasons Why Mysterious Thriller ‘Root Film’ is the Visual Novel You’ve Been Waiting For

Root Film‘ is an original narrative adventure centring around an unusual string of deaths during the production of a once mysteriously cancelled television series. Directed by Hifumi Kono and featuring voice acting from Japanese idols i☆Ris , players are invited to unravel a 10-year-old mystery lost in 35mm film. You will unwittingly become the detective in your very own murder mystery on the set of ‘Root Film’.

Set in a perfect recreation of the stunning coastal Shimane prefecture, origin of Japanese mythology and folklore, the plot ofRoot Film is based around the reboot of a mysteriously cancelled TV series “Shimane Mystery Drama Project”. Take the role of 23-year-old Rintaro Yagumo as his excitement for an amazing casting opportunity is quickly curbed, when a horrible murder interrupts their location scouting process.

5 Reasons Why ‘Root Film’

With a cast of memorable characters illustrated by character designer Taro Minoboshi combined with the masterful storytelling of Kadokawa Games, here are 5 ways ‘Root Film’ is refreshing the visual novel genre with innovativenew features, mechanics and storytelling techniques that separates it from the standard visual novel.

1. Hybrid of Two Genres

‘Root Film’ differs from a standard kinetic novel by fusing elements of both mystery themed visual novels with unique investigative and fighting-game-style mechanics to create an entirely unique experience for players.

Inspired to break the walls of the standard gameplay within the established visual novel genre, Kadokawa Games wanted players to draw from their personal intuition as well as pit them against rapid fire face-off mechanics as a central spoke of the games’ investigation mechanics.

2. Intuition Mechanics

Intuition is a vital asset for any budding detective, especially on the case of a mysterious and inexplicable string of murders. ‘Root Film’s Intuition mechanic allows players to dissect and assess in-game conversations with other characters.

Once activated, Intuition helps the player identify phrases, objects or clues that are essential to investigations and confrontations. By logging these small pieces of the puzzle, suspects can be pressed upon to uncover clues or leads in the investigation.

3. Synesthesia Mechanic

During the course of the investigation, the protagonist will spot keywords that cannot be ignored – identifying suspicious words or phrases using the Intuition system can activate Synesthesia, memorising that moment!

These critical pieces of information indicate clues, inconsistencies or leads that can later be drawn upon in Max Mode interrogations and debates to unravel a suspicious alibi, press for more details or unlock more clues.

4. Max Mode

After collecting enough keywords, players are able to confront suspects in Max Mode, a fast paced, reaction-based interrogation tactic, to press on suspects and expose their lies.

Blending mechanics from various genres, this fighting-game-style one on one showdown allows the player to lie in wait for the perfect moment to force a suspect to reveal his hand! Utilising essential evidence collected through Intuition and other unique features such as Synesthesia and challenges players to piece together the story in an intense, nerve-wracking debate!

5. Zapping?!

There are two sides to every story – experimenting with the ‘zapping’ mechanic allows the player to reveal the perspective of two characters at the same time. Experiencing events from two different viewpoints is an essential tool to discern truth from lies and find out the truth about “Shimane Mystery Drama Project”!
