GamingSquare Sonic 30th anniversary feature

We dive into the world of Sonic The Hedgehog, where it began and the staff sharing their thoughts on the franchise.

I cannot believe we are now celebrating Sonic The Hedgehogs 30th anniversary. It certainly does make you feel old when you think about it.

Sonic The Hedgehog was born in 1991. SEGA’s answer to the behemoth, Super Mario of Nintendo, well I think so anyway. The first Sonic The Hedgehog on the megadrive was a huge success. The game has indeed spun a trilogy, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D and more on Nintendo, Playstation, PC and Xbox consoles over the years. In my opinion (SuperWidzy), I do feel Sonic has definitely lost its way over the years. I guess new generations of fans changes the target audience to meet present time demands? Recent games has brought some sparkle back such as Sonic Team Racing, Sonic Mania for example.

For example. Dr Eggman as he is actually called in Japan, but Amercia changed it to Dr Ivo Robotnik when localizing Sonic The Hedgehog. Going forward, Eggman (his nickname) seems to come across as his main preference when I done some research into the character. Robotnik did seem popular however as SEGA did give him his own game, Dr Robotnik’s mean bean machine on the megadrive. In essence, I prefer Dr Robotnik.

Back to Sonic himself. Not only videogames, cartoons and even a film which is also getting a sequel. Sonic has done well regardless of his struggles with direction which you could argue with a comparison with WWE writers…. Of course SEGA recently announced a remaster of Sonic Colors for the Nintendo Switch and other platforms. Sonic Colors originally was a exclusive to Nintendo DS and the Wii FYI, though I guess many of you would know that.

Let’s move onto some of the staff members thoughts of the Sonic franchise!

Sonic the Hedgehog was introduced to me on the Mega Drive, my stepfather had the first 2 for the console, so I got to experience it both in single player and multiplayer, using my little brother to fly me to new places.
My favourite Sonic game is hard to choose. I have many fond memories playing Sonic Spinball as a child, probably my first time playing pinball as well, still love pinball now too. However, my favourite game has to be Sonic Adventure. Hours spent running around the locations, even more hours playing with the Chao, trying to get fun and interesting colours and shapes from the adorable little creatures.

I would have to say Sonic & Knuckles was my favourite Sonic game. Don’t get me wrong Sonic The Hedgehog 1 to 3 were amazing. I just felt Sonic & Knuckles was the complete package. Nice looking visuals, great music score, great finale. Not only just playing as Sonic you can also pick Knuckles too, whatever else floats your boat.
